I remember my first concert like it was yesterday. Mid summer 2005 and Atmosphere was performing in Atlanta. I finally was getting the chance to see Slug and Ant perform live! I had been a fan of the group since my older brother introduced me to them a few years prior.
You get used to tagging along with older siblings, but this was different. Tonight....girls would be there. Tonight... alcohol would be there. How do you prepare for a night like this? Nobody REALLY knows you. Most conversations consist of being asked what school you go to. What are you studying? Blah, Blah, Blah. But, tonight had to be different. I'm certainly more than someone's kid brother. Right?
I remember diligently starching my jeans (I know, I know. Remember this is 2005) and ironing my t-shirt inside out due to the HEAVY graphics emblazoned on the front. Part nervous, part excited. I'm finally doing grown up shit. Drinking, partying, being young and stupid. When I was close to finished getting ready I realized that I needed something different. I realized that I couldn't leave the house smelling like off brand shower gel. That's when I politely asked big bro if I could borrow some of his "cologne" (Let's face it, most of us who've grown up in the states called it cologne until we knew better). Interestingly enough, I didn't have to beg. The only response I got was "Don't waste that shit". Fair enough. Two spritzes on the neck and I was set.

Later that night as eight of us were all piling into to a friend's beat up Honda Accord I remember one girl saying "someone smells delicious". That was were it all started for me. That was where fragrances became such a big part of my presentation as a man. Seems a bit shallow for it to have started from a passing comment by a friend of a friend of a friend, but who cares. Journeys can start in the unlikeliest of ways.
